Most people visit Hobbiton as a day trip — but staying a night in Matamata means an unhurried tour time, a relaxed dinner in town and no long drive back in the dark. Here's the local rundown of where to stay, by type, and how to find the right bed for your dates.

Hobbiton tours run morning to evening and the set is about 15 minutes from town. Basing yourself in Matamata lets you take a quieter mid-morning or late-afternoon tour, fit in Okoroire Hot Springs or the Blue Spring, and have a proper meal at one of the town's restaurants instead of rushing back to Auckland or Rotorua. It's also the easiest way to be first in line for an early summer tour.
The most common option, clustered along and just off Broadway. Handy for walking to dinner and a short, simple drive to the set in the morning. Best value for couples and small families who just need a clean, central base for a night or two.
Good for campervans, road-trippers and families — powered sites, cabins and self-contained units with shared kitchens and laundry. The flexible, lower-cost way to spend a night near the Shire without booking far ahead.
Whole houses and baches in and around town suit larger groups, longer stays or anyone who wants their own kitchen and space. Often the best per-head value once you're four or more people travelling together.
Matamata sits in rich dairy and equine country, and a handful of farm stays and rural B&Bs offer a quieter, distinctly Waikato experience a few minutes from town — a lovely fit if Hobbiton is the relaxed centrepiece of your trip rather than a quick stop.
If Matamata is full around peak summer or an event, Cambridge, Tirau and Te Aroha are all roughly 30–40 minutes away with their own motels and B&Bs, and still an easy morning run to the set.
Beds are tight over the December–February peak, school holidays and event weekends (like the Hobbiton Half Marathon). Book a few weeks ahead for summer; midweek and off-season you can usually be more spontaneous.
