The quick version
You can't visit the set on your own — it's on private farmland and access is by guided walking tour only, booked in advance. All tours leave from The Shire's Rest, 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera (signposted from Matamata). Coming from out of town? Day tours and transfers run from Auckland (~2 hrs) and Rotorua (~1 hr), so you don't need a car or a place to stay locally.

Day tour from Auckland
Full-day guided trip with return transfers and your Hobbiton tour included — often combined with the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Ideal if you're based in Auckland.
Day tour / transfer from Rotorua
Rotorua is only about an hour away, so this is the shortest day trip — tour plus return transfer, back in time for dinner.
Evening banquet tour
For something special, the evening banquet tour includes a feast at the Green Dragon Inn. Limited dates — book well ahead.
