Why you can only visit on a tour

The Hobbiton Movie Set sits on a private working farm, so the only way in is on a guided walking tour booked in advance. That's why every "ticket" is really a tour ticket — there's no gate you can just walk through.

The main ticket types

The standard option is the Hobbiton Movie Set walking tour (about 2 hours, ~2 km walk, a drink at the Green Dragon Inn). There's usually a tour + lunch combo, and the special evening banquet tour with a feast at the Green Dragon. From Auckland or Rotorua, day-tour packages add return transfers on top of the tour price.

What it costs (and why we don't quote a fixed price)

Prices change with season and ticket type, and bundled transfers add to the total, so rather than print a figure that goes stale we'll send you current pricing and availability for the exact option you want. Tell us your dates and where you're coming from and we'll come back with the real numbers.

Book ahead — especially over summer

Tours regularly sell out in summer (December–February) and around public holidays. If your dates are fixed, lock them in early; if they're flexible, midweek and shoulder seasons are quieter.
