Why every ticket is a tour ticket

The Hobbiton Movie Set sits on a private working farm, so there's no gate you can walk through — the only way in is on a guided walking tour. That's the first thing to understand about the cost: you're not buying entry to a park, you're buying a guided experience, which is why even the cheapest option is priced as a tour. The ticket types — and what each one includes

There are a few different tours, and the price climbs with how much is bundled in. From most affordable to most expensive:

• Standard Movie Set walking tour — the core experience and the lowest-priced ticket. About a 2-hour guided walk (~2 km) through the 44 hobbit holes, the Mill and the Party Tree, finishing with a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn. This is what most visitors book.
• Tour + lunch — the same walking tour with a lunch added on. A small step up in price; worth it if you'd otherwise be hunting for food afterwards and want to make a half-day of it.
• Evening banquet tour — the premium on-site option. A later walk through The Shire as the light drops, followed by a sit-down feast at the Green Dragon. It costs the most of the tours run at the set, and runs less often, so dates are tighter.
• Day tour with return transfers — the walking tour bundled with return coach travel from Auckland or Rotorua. Usually the dearest overall because you're paying for several hours of transport on top of the tour — but the easiest choice if you don't have a car.

What it costs — and why we don't print a number

As a rule of thumb the standard adult walking tour is the cheapest, the lunch and banquet tours step up from there, and the day tours with transfers are the priciest because of the coach travel built in. Child and family rates are usually available, and young children often go free — ask us for the current figures and the age cut-offs.

We deliberately don't publish a dollar amount here: tour prices shift with the season and the operator, and bundled transfers change the total depending on where you start, so any number we typed would be out of date within weeks.
