How to book Hobbiton tickets

Every visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set is a pre-booked guided tour — there's no walk-up entry. Here's how booking works, how far ahead to do it, and how to avoid the summer sell-outs.

How Hobbiton booking works

Because the set is on private farmland, your 'ticket' is really a tour ticket for a specific date and time. You pick a tour type and a departure time, and you're booked onto that guided walking group. You can either book the walking tour only (and drive yourself to The Shire's Rest) or a day-tour package that bundles return transfers from Auckland or Rotorua with the tour.

How far ahead should you book?

For summer (December–February), public holidays and weekends, book as far ahead as you can — popular slots sell out weeks in advance. In the quieter months you can often book a few days out, but the best times still go first. If your dates are fixed, don't leave it to chance; if they're flexible, midweek and shoulder seasons have the most availability.

Choosing the right tour

Most visitors take the standard ~2 hour walking tour (with a drink at the Green Dragon Inn). Want more? There's a tour + lunch option and the special evening banquet tour with a feast at the Inn. Coming from out of town without a car? Choose a day tour with transfers from Auckland or Rotorua. Not sure which fits? See tickets & prices for the trade-offs.

Quick answers

How do I book Hobbiton tickets?

You book a guided tour for a specific date and time — either the walking tour only (drive yourself) or a day-tour package with return transfers from Auckland or Rotorua. There's no walk-up entry. Tell us your dates and we'll send you the best options.

How far in advance should I book Hobbiton?

As early as possible for summer (Dec–Feb), weekends and public holidays, when tours sell out weeks ahead. In quieter months a few days' notice is often enough, but the best times still go first.

Can you book a Hobbiton tour on the day?

Sometimes in the quiet season, but it's risky — tours frequently sell out, especially in summer and on holidays. Booking ahead is strongly recommended.
