Guides › Matamata to Hobbiton: getting to the Movie Set
We live in Matamata, so we get this question a lot: how do you actually get from town to the Hobbiton Movie Set? It's closer and simpler than people expect — here's exactly how it works.

Not far at all. The Hobbiton Movie Set is about 15 minutes from central Matamata — all tours depart from The Shire's Rest, 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, which is signposted from town. You head out State Highway 29 / Tower Road way and follow the brown tourist signs; it's an easy, scenic drive through Waikato farmland with no tricky turns.
If you've got a car, driving is the simplest option. There's free parking at The Shire's Rest, where you check in, grab a coffee at the cafe and board the shuttle that takes you the last stretch onto the farm to start your guided tour. Aim to arrive 20–30 minutes before your tour time so check-in is relaxed. One thing to know: you can't drive yourself onto the set itself — everyone boards the Hobbiton shuttle from The Shire's Rest.
If you're staying in town without a vehicle, there's a shuttle from the Matamata i-SITE visitor centre on Broadway in the middle of town out to The Shire's Rest, timed to tour departures. It's the easy car-free way to get there from Matamata — check current times and booking with the i-SITE, as it runs to a schedule rather than on demand. Coming from further afield instead? See our guides on getting there from Auckland or from Rotorua.
However you travel, remember the set is on a private working farm — there's no walk-up entry, so you must have a tour booked in advance for a set date and time. Plan your arrival around that slot, and if you've got the day spare, build in lunch in town afterwards with our one day in Matamata guide. Not booked yet? We'll send you tour and transfer options for your dates.
